What is the Cross Training Association all about?

This is the UK Cross Training Association Website and it is dedicated to promoting cross training and cross training events and in particular the new sport called the 'Octathalon'. Participants either race each other in a 'knock-out' style race or compete against the clock to be the fastest to complete a course of various gym exercises that test all round strength and cardiovascular fitness. To run the course is possibly the best complete workout you can get in the time taken. Clubs all around the UK hold their own cross training competitions with their own individual courses. The UKXTA is here to help promote the ones that are run well and the ones that have sensibly constructed courses as well as to support and empower the competitors in this sport.

UK National Cross Training Championships

For the last three years the UKXTA have hosted the pinnacle of the cross training calendar - The UK National Cross Training Championships with their Octathalon course. The Octathalon, now generally agreed to the be the best cross training course and the one that all top cross trainers aspire to get into, is now run by the World Octathalon Association in conjunction with the UKXTA. In 2009 two Regional qualifying cross training championships will be run, on the Octathalon course, as a prelude to the UK National Championships. This will produce a Northern Cross training Champion and a Southern Cross Training Champion. The WOA will provide resources and sponsorship for these events. Included in these events will be a pairs challenge and a club team challenge to find the top Northern and Southern Cross training club and the top county Men's and Women's pairs champions.

The Octathalon

Currently the WOA run two types of Octathalon - The Cup Octathalon and the Club Octathalon. The Octathalon is a gym based event that consists of eight gym exercises that test an athlete for all round strength and fitness. The exercises are as follows:- Upright Bike, Lat Pull downs, Step ups, Sit ups, Row, Bench press, Treadmill run, Shoulder press.  The Cup Octathalon is a course with heavier weights for the elite athletes, whilst the Club Octathalon course is for individuals in clubs and gyms.

The WOA is starting  an age related league of top times for the Octathalon and this is open to everyone. Why not run through either of the courses in your won gym and see how your time compares. If you want to improve your fitness, why not go on to purchase an Octathalon Training diary. It caters for all levels of fitness from the beginner to the elite athlete as it is based on heart rate training.

Cross Training Calendar   The coming Cross Training events in 2008 that have been recognised by The Association. New stipulations, made by a panel of fitness professionals, require that all events we promote must be well balanced and non injurious in the training preparation for the event and in the event itself. It is up to the event organisers to get in touch with us if they want us to promote their event. We also reserve the right of classification of a cross training event. It is our contention that cross training is all about fitness and recovery rates and having a course that tests that to the full is important. One of the best ways this is done is when a course ends with a CV exercise followed by a strength event and this is part of true cross training tradition. This ending challenges a persons ability to recover and flush out lactic acid in the muscles better than almost any other combination. If we feel a course does not test this and fails this criteria, we reserve the right to not promote that course. We also reserve the right to not promote courses that are too extreme in their nature for the single reason we do not want to put off people who are looking to come into this sport.

UK Ranking Lists   The UKXTA Ranking lists are now driven by the fastest times done in the Octathalon Cup competition. This creates 5 ladders. Head to head racing at cross training events throughout the following year will see people go up and down the UKXTA ladders. To get into a higher ladder, you will need to get a better Octathalon time at the end of the year. Head to head racing at events can allow you to jump right to the top of the ladder if you can beat people above you.

THE CLUB OCTATHALON  competition  This is a chance for your own club to run an event over a period of time in your own gym. Click on the link to find details of the club course. It is the same as the Cup course but has less weights and provides an nice introduction to cross training. For club managers wishing to run events we will send a free pack out to them that will include details on the event and a poster that can go up on gym notice boards to record the results. Teams, Masters and Most improved times can all be recorded on it. All the managers have to do is to email us stating that they will run an event and a pack will be sent out. All we would then request is that the champions names and times are sent back to us. If you would like to help us by sending a cheque for £5 to cover post and packaging that would also be appreciated.

UKXTA members  All UKXTA members can also request a free poster for their gym. All we again ask is a contribution towards post and packaging and that they get approval of their gym manager to put the poster up and run an event.

Age Category Times    This part of the site is for those athletes wishing to compare and contrast their times for running through the UKXTA courses with others. At the moment there are only times for the 2005 Cup Course and they are split according to age category. If you run through the course in your own gym, you will be able to compare your times with others. Become a member and join and your time will be added to the list and as a member you will receive cross training tips throughout the cross training season.

You can do this in the comfort of your own gym and in your own time but you must be witnessed by your gym manager or other gym official. You will soon be able to see how your all round fitness has progressed over time. The top cross trainers compete over the 2005 Cup course so you could even compare your times with these athletes. You may even be good enough to get into the National competition if your times are good enough.
